Controllers Comments

I controlled a badge event in Cawthorne in February 1982.  A surveyor for that event was Ray Waight who also made a major contribution to this CS Cup match by updating the map, taking immense pains to get it right and I think he succeeded.  He posted his files on Monday night two weeks ago and 36 hours later we had them back - Kallkwick did a superb job producing a very clear map.

Over the 22 years the wood has greatly changed.  The brambles have grown apace in the western half - there were some 22 years ago but generally that side was very runnable.  However, the eastern half was then largely dark green.  There were significant areas we didn't use because of that and what we did provided rather dull orienteering.  Now that side has become much more enjoyable to run through and direct routes paid off.

The constraints of the area on the planner are obvious but most of you enjoyed Ruth's courses and didn't complain too much about the brambles - she tried to offer routes on the western side which didn't involve ploughing through the worst of the areas.   However, there were some objections to the Green W course and it clearly proved too long - my apologies for that.  There was a bit of grizzling about the use of the two knolls 89 and 99 in the west.  They were just about legal but we ought to have given them less similar numbers.   I look forward to those young and athletic grizzlers taking up controlling so the old men can be put out to grass.

There were nice comments about SYO's organisation led by Charlie Adams.  They went out of their way to make this a good event and it was much appreciated.   The two winning clubs will now make everyone in YHOA and NEOA much more cheerful if they go on to win the 2004 Cup and Trophy.
